Our Time Is Now
©2006 (lyrics & music by JJ Benson) Hear the crowd – now they’re chanting our name The stadium is rockin’ – ready for the game Take a breath and try to focus in Opportunity is ours to take History right here and now is ours to make Let’s shock the world and show that we can win All the words of the people who doubt us Are gonna make us laugh when they’re raving about us They can’t see it ‘til it’s staring ‘em right in the face Times change and there’s no looking back The wheels are in motion – the train’s on the track So jump on board or you better get out of the way Our time is now… now…. “Thanks for stopping by,” he says “We love your music, but we’re gonna have to pass. It’d be too risky trying to market you. See, it’s all about the bottom line Ya gotta sound just like the bands that we’ve already signed and you gotta look more like you’re 22.” All the words of the people who doubt us Are gonna make us laugh when they’re raving about us They can’t see it ‘til it’s staring ‘em right in the face Times change and there’s no looking back The wheels are in motion – the train’s on the track So jump on board or you better get out of the way Our time is now… now…. Our time is now… You can’t afford to wait – no time to hesitate If you want to create your fate… Rap: We weren’t ready when we started out Takes time – gotta learn what it’s all about So we paid our dues – laid our foundation Now it’s time to take it to the nation - oh – get ready to see our sound and faces on tv What? I know your ass ain’t gon’ believe ‘til the whole world’s singing “I know you wanna be me” It’s true for all y’all – set a goal and never waver, not at all Ya gotta know deep in your soul That the haters tryin’ to bring you down gon’ fall Don’t wait ‘til later – start right now building your elevator Ya gotta take your shot before the clock runs out… Our time is now |

When JJ first came up with the keyboard/string line (hook) of the song, he felt it lended itself to aggressive production and an eventual sync-up with sports in some capacity. It reminded him of the type of adrenaline-rush intro music played prior to kickoff at football games or tipoff at basketball games to hype the crowd, so that theory drove his direction with the lyrics. Highlights: the double-drum sections/fills, Brian Haley's drum solo and the Omen-esque operatic background vocal countermelody during the last chorus. (ps - those aren't actual chimes following the countermelody. That was a shelving bracket tuned!) |

©2006 (lyrics & music by JJ Benson) I guess in me you found the perfect rebound – did it make you feel better? Finally treated right, with lovin’ outa sight – nobody’s made you wetter All the wild nights and all the little lies you told him so that we could be I guess I shoulda seen that lies would end up being told to me eventually When you look into the mirror what do you see? When you lay down at night, tell me how do you sleep - knowing what you’ve done to me? Oh…all these games that you play Oh…will come back and haunt you someday Oh…let me introduce you to a little thing called the truth Like everybody else, I fell under your spell - I let you in my soul When doubts would fill my head, you’d lure me into bed where you knew you had control Unless you’re all alone, you won’t pick up your phone - I guess that shoulda been a clue So full of alibis, ya don’t look me in the eyes, how dumb was I for trusting you? When you look into the mirror what do you see? When you lay down at night, tell me how do you sleep? Look at what you’ve done to me Oh…all these games that you play Oh…will come back and haunt you someday Oh…let me introduce you to a little thing called the truth |

The verses of this bitter send-off to a cheating ex-lover were actually written by JJ in 2003 with an entirely different chorus. Unsatisfied with the hook/chorus, he sent the song to the backburner and let it marinate for several years. In the beginning stages of writing new material for Edge of Content, he pulled the song back out and completely rewrote (and vastly improved) the chorus. Sometimes a song sits unfinished for years before it suddenly demands to be revisited so it can take shape. Highlight: Robert's bass solo. *the audio clip inserted at the beginning of the tune is from one of the band's favorite movies, the highly underrated 1981 Albert Brooks film "Modern Romance." * |

©2006 (words by JJ Benson & Steven Maldonado; music by JJ Benson, Steven Maldonado, Brian Haley, Josh Merritt & Tim Rosenau) He was all she’d known – Katie had never been alone but she had dreams of something bigger than Tennessee She packed up nineteen years of clothes and memories into two suitcases to try to become the next big thing in the City of Angels but she never thought she’d spend three years waitressing in hopes of landing the role of a girl who’s in love… As she boards the plane, says goodbye to L.A. She’s on her way back home Sees the city fade into yesterday though she’s on her way back home, destination still unknown He took a job with his dad fixing washers and dryers He met a girl named Jane at the Dairy Queen and they fell in love – so they say, but every Saturday they go to a matinee where he quietly hopes that his first love Katie’s face will appear on the screen… As she boards the plane, says goodbye to L.A. She’s on her way back home Sees the city fade into yesterday Though she’s on her way back home, destination still unknown Destination still….and it always will…be unknown As she boards the plane, says goodbye to L.A. She’s on her way back home Sees the city fade into yesterday She’s on her way back home As she boards the plane, says goodbye to L.A. She’s on her way back home As her future fades into yesterday wherever the road may go, destination still unknown |

This song was originally the brainchild of ex-bandmember Brian Haley, who worked out a rough demo of the groove and basic chord structure with bassist Josh Merritt and guitarist Tim Rosenau in Tim's home studio. Brian brought the demo to JJ & Meven, who loved the feel of the song. After tweaking the chord changes, adding a prechorus and writing a melody, the lyrical direction came easy. A bittersweet testament to the difficulty of following dreams of fame/fortune and balancing that endeavor with finding love nearly wrote itself after the chorus lyric appeared to Meven & JJ. The lack of resolution to the story of aspiring actress Katie and her small-town first love was a deliberate attempt to illustrate the apparent ambiguity of life's direction, and how even when we make conscious life-altering decisions, we're never quite certain what the outcome will be or if we made the right choice. Highlight: Meven's vocal in the breakdown section. |

©2006 (lyrics by JJ Benson; music by JJ Benson, Robert Wright, Bryan Pyzer and Rick Lay) She sees him coming so she crosses the street Looks at her watch so she’ll seem more discreet Heaven forbid that their eyes should meet… She sees another so she does something worse Picks up her pace as she clutches her purse While in her mind reciting lines of Bible verse… There’s saints & there’s sinners – there’s love and there’s hate We get what we give – we choose our own fate Look at little closer if you don’t like everything that you see Try to see beyond your predetermined animosity ‘cause the whole world is a mirror and there’s a whole lot of you in me He checks his bags and he approaches the gate Just four hours ‘til he sees her again Dreams of her smile as he steps aboard the plane Suspicious eyes in aisles 1, 2 and 3 He hears the whispers as he looks for his seat Everyone’s a jury in this land of the free… There’s heroes & martyrs – there’s wrong & there’s right There’s light & there’s darkness – there’s black & there’s white Look a little closer if you don’t like everything that you see Open up your mind and see the truth lies somewhere in-between ‘cause the whole world is a mirror and there’s a whole lot of you in me |

This lyric and musical idea floated around JJ's consciousness for a few years before materializing as the rehearsals started to take place in preparation for recording Edge of Content. A lyrical statement about prejudice and close-mindedness, this "message" song drives home the band's belief that we're all more closely related than we might sometimes believe, and that the best way to approach every new person we meet is with a clean slate and an open mind. JJ wrote the verses & choruses, but needed the collective creative energy of the band to come up with a bridge. The 80's-meets-the-future approach to the instrumental breakdown (bridge) was a true example of great band collaboration, as the buildup with delay-heavy guitar and layered synths creates the perfect crescendo leading into the dry rhodes&vocal breakdown. Highlight: Robert's bass fills leading back into each phrase of the verses. Also note the effectiveness of his production decision to tune Meven's lead vocal in the prechorus into background harmonies and send them through a vocoder. The atmospheric, nearly robotic pulse and energy of the song is an intentional complement to the lyric -- prejudiced thiking is normally pre-programmed and robotic in nature. |

Cuz you caught me by surprise and unprepared to dull the pain I’m all out of anesthesia and it looks like….it’s gonna rain So strange – just how fast it all can change Nothing beautiful can ever stay the same It’s all just a game that I’ve grown too old to play But I’m a fool who never learns from his mistakes So anyway… This wasn’t the way I thought I’d plunge to my defeat I figured something more dramatic – something far more indiscreet …and now I’m left to wonder what I didn’t say or do but at least I get to spend my time regretting….something new… So strange – just how fast it all can change Nothing beautiful can ever stay the same It’s all just a game that I’ve grown too old to play But I’m a fool who never learns from his mistakes So anyway… This wasn’t the way our story was supposed to end. |

A cynical, sad lament on the futility felt after another failed relationship ends, this song was perfectly suited to Meven's honest, intimate vocal delivery. The band toyed with the idea of producing this song as just a piano/vocal ballad, but decided that bigger was probably better when it came to production on this one. Highlight: Little B's searingly emotional guitar solo and the orchestra countermelody soaring underneath it throughout its conclusion. |

The conclusion to the story first told in "California King" (from 2002's "For All Intent & Purposes"), this song describes the surprisingly anticlimatic lack of emotion felt by the subject when he unexpectedly reunites briefly with the ex for whom he's spent so many years pining, regretting and wondering. He quickly learns that it's much easier to romanticize the past when we don't attempt to relive it. The band intended to work this song out in rehearsals for 2004's "Temporal Bliss," but the song fell flat after repeated efforts to pump life into it. Meven and JJ shelved the idea temporarily, but still believed in the strength of the lyric and melody. They revisited the song in 2006 with fresh ears & eyes and added a 2nd-half to the first verse, then brought it to the new version of the band during rehearsals for Edge of Content. With a blank canvas stylistically on which to paint this lyric/melody, the band instantly fell into a much funkier approach this time around, spurred on by Robert's twist on the bassline to the bridge of The SOS band's "Take Your Time (Do It Right)". Highlights: Rick's swinging subtle drum fills; Robert's layered backgrounds during the bridge and chorus vamp; Little B's Prince-inspired rhythm parts and JJ's rhodes noodling over the outro. |

An idea that generated in Meven's brain during an extended love affair with Marc Broussard's "Carencro" CD, this song explores the band's bluesier side and provides an environment for Meven to display more gritty, soulful vocals than the band's music usually requires from him. The reason for the seemingly insecure paranoia of the subject's skepticism and doubt about the fidelity of his lover is explained in the final prechorus of this extended Addiction-style-blues-jam. (ie: one can never be fully secure in relationships that are formed through a web of deceit and betrayal). Highlights: Meven's uber-soulful vocals, JJ & Little B's bluesy solo tradeoffs and Robert's scorching vocal answers to Meven during the crescendos at the end. |

I couldn't say no - oh oh oh, no... I keep on debating about this choice we're making it's time I reclaim control Tonight I'll resist her and when she moves in, I'm not even gonna kiss her I've gotta end this after the show but she's a great persuader, and like a “Now & Later” only an hour later I can still taste her ‘cause when she's on her knees, it's like she's born to please and I'm a slave who must obey her I couldn't say no - oh oh oh, no... I couldn't say no - oh oh oh, no... She’s like a drug I keep injecting though I know it’s not right Why can’t I learn to just say no? I couldn't say no - oh oh oh, no... Another tale of lies and infidelity, this song serves as a married entertainer's desperate rationalization for his continuous inability to resist the advances of one particular "fan" at his shows. The sexually charged lyrics are energized by Rick's thumping 60's style floor-tom & snare backbeat and Little B's tremolo'd low-notes "surfer guitar" approach. Highlights: Little B's twangy solo circa 1963 amidst a backdrop of drums, horns and cheering crowd. Hidden in the mix are further audio references from Albert Brooks' "Modern Romance." |

An ode to the moment when one becomes aware of how toxic a bad relationship can be (and the need to fully escape it to get over it), "Detox" makes The Addiction's apropros analogy between substance addiction and relationship addiction. Each can be equally destructive. The melody and lyric to the hook first came to JJ a few years ago, and he brought it to Meven to help flesh it out after the release of "Temporal Bliss" in '04. The band recorded the song with Ben Phillips and Stephen Gause before Robert and his engineering/producing/mixing talents entered the picture. Upon Robert's arrival and the decision to record the remainder of Edge of Content with Robert at the helm, the finished tracks were acquired from Ben and mixed/mastered by Robert. Highlight: the intensity of the buildup as the band drives home the hook one last time in the final chorus. |

Another lament on love gone wrong, Meven and JJ explore dozens of analogies between the looming end of a relationship and the looming end of nearly everything else that ends in life. The marraige of sad lyrics with happy music was the goal here, and the latin Bolero groove complete with mariachi horns and hootin/hollerin' fiesta partygoers helps achieve that goal quite nicely. Highlight: Meven and JJ's lounge-singer-ish vocals; Rick's jalapeno-spicy hand percussion and Robert's mariachi trumpet melodic replies. Sometimes love requires you to make the difficult decision to let go of someone you care about because it's what's best for the both of you. This heartfelt ode to that moment was written by JJ in 2004, and the band agreed that it was best served by a minimalist, intimate rhodes/vocal approach. The stamp on the end of the CD encapsulates the running theme of discomfort and pain with regard to love/relationships, but the bridge provides a glimmer of hope for something better...the possibility of actually finding contentment rather than always standing on the edge of it. Highlight: Meven's vocal delivery from the first moment of this song to the last. |

We've been compared a lot to Maroon 5 since their ascent to superstardom, and the similarity is probably most prevalent on this song. A kiss-off to a female who makes the wrong choice (are any of our songs about females HAPPY?), this one is most likely the lead single. Listen for the creepy low voice doubling Meven waaaay back in the mix during the chorus. Studio trickery is fun shiznit. |

Meven & JJ wrote this song in the car on the way to a gig in Mississippi. Frustrated with the CONFORMITY that happens too often in the music industry (and the world in general), they vented through this catchy pop/rock confection. Interesting sidenote: JJ's 5-year old niece loves to sing along to this song, and thinks the hook in the chorus is "you're just a walk in the shade". |

thinking back to what they had in another space and time when they were young and in love, they said they'd never give up thought their love was enough to hold it all together tested their luck on the coast of Sunset Bay now they're cutting the ties, Jodi's dotting her "i's" any tear that she cries wouldn't change her fate today...no way for all the sacred promises that were lost along the way she tries not to think as she pours another drink with a silent toast to her freedom sunday Although they both were much too young, nothing could've changed their minds and she found out much too late what nobody hopes to find when the waters get rough and there isn't enough unconditional love to hold it all together where do you turn when the passion fades away? now with tears in her eyes, she's finally realized all the secrets and lies are what led them here today... for all the sacred promises that were lost along the way she tries not to think as she pours another drink with a silent toast to her freedom sunday |

This song came together in 2002 at the end of sessions for our first CD; we wrote it when it was too late to add it to that album. Frustrating. But we hung on to it and reworked it a little with more of a reggae feel thanks to Little B's input and it turned out to be a highlight of the new CD. Sometimes you just have to be patient and wait til you get the chance to record a song; even if it takes 2 years. (We just wrote a GREAT new song called "Detox" just a little too late to add to the new CD. Sense a pattern here?) |

The hook to the tune was written by Meven and brought to JJ to help finish. This was originally intended to be an upbeat pop/funk tune, but in early rehearsals for the CD, it just wasn't coming together. We were about ready to give up on the song, but bassist Josh Merritt said the melody & hook was strong and we should keep trying. He suggested we slow it down half-speed and do it as a mid-tempo song, almost a ballad. We tried it and all fell in love with the new feel of it; suddenly the song made sense musically. HUGE props to Josh for his flawless instincts and musicianship. We feel this song has a old-school retro soul feel to it; if you hear echoes of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" and the Eagles' "I Can't Tell You Why", we achieved our goal on this one.

Drummer Brian's first serious foray into writing, the years he's spent on tour with Toby Mac can be felt in this heavy funk/rock mix written in 2004. Brian came up with the basic groove and guitar riff with talented friend Michael Ripoll and laid down the basics; then he brought it to JJ and Meven to help create a melody and lyrics. This song REALLY came to life in the studio, getting stronger and tighter with each layer. This rocks harder than anything we've ever done, and is likely to surprise our fanbase a little. That's always a good thing. Keep ya on your toes. |

The groove in the verse was hanging around for about a year before we turned it into a song; it was a regular soundcheck goof-off groove we'd do to get warmed up. Suddenly it became a song. Meven and JJ laughed hysterically the entire time they wrote the lyrics. (We sincerely hope everyone GETS the joke). The chorus' "na-na-na-na-na" hook was Brian's idea - a very catchy idea at that; the vastly different feel to the chorus, prechorus and verse somehow still fit together. |

Don't think you can walk back into my life like you never walked away
don't think you can nonchalantly say the words I've longed to hear you say Don't try to look into my eyes, don't wanna hear you say my name Don't try to touch my hand and kiss me as if everything's the same don't think you can walk back into my life like you never walked away Don't think you can waltz back into my world like I could easily forget as if we could recreate the passion that we felt when we first met Don't think I can sit here next to you without it feeling a little strange after all this time has passed and now that everything has changed don't think you can walk back into my world like you never walked away It wasn't easy, but I've finally gotten over you Now suddenly you're sitting here with me and it's clear to see just how easily I could get weak and make a foolish move... If you're gonna walk back into my life like you never walked away if you're gonna nonchalantly say the words I've longed to hear you say as you look into my eyes and I hear you say my name as you touch my hand and kiss me as if everything's the same if you're gonna walk back into my life, don't ever walk away if you're gonna walk back into my life, don't ever walk...away |

This song is not only a true story, it was written just minutes after the girl who is the subject left JJ's house after a SEVERAL month absence from his life (nearly a year?). She drove away, he sat at the piano, and this song just instantly appeared. Inspiration is a crazy thing indeed. And yes, in case you're wondering, he did make that "foolish move". Sucker. But not for long. (She's long since vanished from his radar). We purposely kept the production very minimal and stripped down on this song so as to keep the focus on Meven's vocals and the catchy Beatlesque melody.

Our ode to shallow, superficial, plastic girls (hence the mannequins and barbie dolls on the CD artwork) and our need for something MORE. Seen enough of that; need something deeper. Inspired by Prince and that Minneapolis funk, this one is made even funkier by the sweet horn stylings of Chuck Shumacker.

This song was written in late 2002 and the lyrics are fairly autobiographical (about the same ex who resurfaced to inspire "foolish move" several months later). Groove Addiction's big power ballad, this song was tracked when Donnie was still in the band, so his vocals can be heard as part of the velvety-smooth background harmonies. Take note of Little B's Neal Schon/Steve Lukather-ish passionate searing guitar solo; a personal fave of the band. The epic power ending was inspired by Prince's "The Beautiful Ones" and is intended to include a little G-N-R's Slash's guitar tone as we bring it home. We hope our musical interpretation of this song complements the lyrics in a way that makes you FEEL its passion.

This song is another great idea that began with Brian. Collaborating with friend Chris Dauphin, Brian came up with the groove/concept to the verse and chorus, and again utilized Michael Ripoll to help him track it so he could communicate the idea effectively to the rest of the band. We all instantly loved it. Meven and JJ came up with a melody, but toyed with several different lyrical concepts and had a rough time nailing down what the song should say. During rehearsals, Little B came up with the smokin' Lenny Kravitz/Aerosmith-ish bridge, which we all loved. When sessions began for the CD, we still didn't have lyrics for it, but we recorded it anyway and hoped we'd get inspired by the time we got to tracking vocals. JJ found that inspiration just in the nick of time and came up with a lyrical concept everyone liked. Meven really takes this one to another level with his unique vocal stylings in the bridge. Also listen for Brian Haley's voice during the prechorus ("wha?" "ooh" "oh no!"). Great idea that could have only come from Brian!

This one is Meven's simple ode to his girlfriend Amanda; he and JJ purposely set out to write simple lyrics, a simple melody and simple chords. Originally intended to have an atmospheric techno groove underneath it (we wanted it to be a song you could be listening to in the car and suddenly realize you're going 90 miles an hour), it took a turn musically when everyone in the band brought their energy to it in rehearsal. In the style of Sade's band, this song shows the jazzier, softer side of groove addiction - along the same lines as "Spaceship In A Bottle" from the first record, this song provides an ideal bed for Rick to lay his tasteful percussion spice over the top. Special thanks to Chuck Shumacker for adding a nice touch with the sax flavor throughout. |

This song should speak for itself; a heartbreaker that was very personal and real for JJ when he wrote it -- Meven makes this song truly his own with the standout vocal performance on the CD. Tasteful arrangement and understated playing from everyone on this track (if we do say so ourselves, lol) help to drive home the sincerity of the lyrics.

’94 in July on a hot night – top down, cruisin’ town in the Mustang
first kiss dead-stopped at a green light, things we said stayin’ awake til the sun came up – shared dreams staring back from a coffee cup we found our answers waiting in your bed Getting lost on a trip to Graceland, spent the night at the Mojo Inn drank too much red wine and danced to “Hey Nineteen” Looking back now I can’t recall words said – why it had to fall apart …seems so long ago (oh) I wonder what she’d say if she knew that sometimes I still think about you It’s not that I would change a single thing, but sometimes the memories start me wondering… Do you still sleep on that California king Do you watch the same t.v.? Do you wake up at a quarter-to-three just to tell him about your dreams or do you dream of me? Times change but I’m still doing alright – wild nights makin’ love by the moonlight long gone with the Mustang that seats only two… Someday when you hear this song, will you think back & wonder what went wrong? will you even tell him that it’s written ‘bout you? (oh) I wonder if you think about it too, and does he take good care of you? I’m not saying we should change a single thing, but sometimes the memories start me wondering… Do you still sleep on that California king Do you watch the same t.v.? Do you wake up at a quarter-to-three just to tell him about your dreams or do you dream of me? |

Ahhh...a song reminiscing about an old flame and the many happy memories created on her large bed. Most people have a "one that got away", and even if you're happy now, you may wonder "what if" from time to time. This is largely a true story, with a few embellishments here and there; we were especially proud to give a reference nod to Steely Dan - one of our big influences. (we acknowledge them again, along with other great idols of our past, on "Slide My Way" from the new CD). This song officially got the "spank" treatment from Kelly. We had high hopes for the catchy & strong hook of this song to help us land a record deal, but alas, it was not meant to be. Not YET, anyway. |

JJ toyed around with this musical concept (chords & melody) for awhile before presenting it to Meven. Together they started writing lyrics without a complete vision of where they were going -- just jotting down every detail in a boring workday. By the time they got to the chorus, suddenly the song had purpose.
Still a favorite to perform live among the band, the buildup at the end provides an opportunity to really cut loose. |

For this song, Meven and JJ decided to step into another persona -- that of a hopelessly dorky dude who is a miserable failure with the women (I know -- not much of a stretch, huh?) He's desperate to win back his girlfriend and turns to his trusty Magic 8 Ball to give him the answers to his fate.
Rippin' guitar solo from former GA guitarist Marshall Moody on this one, and Rick laid down a great garbage can solo in the breakdown. Interesting sidenote: the crowd noise and handclaps were done by JJ, Meven, Brian and Meven's girlfriend Amanda. Over & over. And layered. One take after another. JJ's 5-year old niece, after hearing the lyric "I ain't that fly", asked "why did he eat a fly?" |

don’t even know if you’re gonna be a little boy or a girl I think it’s wise to apologize before you open your eyes for all the things you’re gonna have to face before you’re ready… - don’t ever feel rejected – if u see hate, don’t be infected - don’t be ashamed to be yourself in spite of pressure to be like everybody else - don’t try to grow up too fast; let your innocent last - don’t be afraid to just be… just be honest – even when it’s easier to lie try to think positive – those times when all you wanna do is cry just be faithful – to all the people in your life in all u do, just be true to you-know-who and you’ll be…alright Sixth grade they learn the safe way to have sex junior high they gettin' high on x join a gang ‘cause their role models do the same it ain’t a sega game – guns goin’ bang bang lost souls – whole generation takin’ pills to get thru, gettin' by on the cheap thrills don’t let it sink in, under your skin – protect your soul from the feel-good spin… - don’t lose your sense of self-respect, love ain’t just about sex - form your own opinions based on fact – think before u react - don’t take your eyes off the goal – knowledge is the power that feeds the soul - don’t be quick to judge – try to spread love… just be honest – even when it’s easier to lie try to think positive – those times when all you wanna do is cry just be thankful – for all the people in your life in all u do, just be true to you-know-who and you’ll be…alright just be giving – even when there’s nothing left to gain try to be sensitive – to other people’s pain do the right thing – even when nobody wants to do the same in all u do, just be true to you-know-who and you’ll be…okay |

Most of you already know the story about this one, but we'll sum it up for you quickly here: Meven, on the verge of becoming a father, talks to JJ about the enormity of how much his life is about to change. (By the way, yes, this was long before the band Creed hit the scene). Meven suggests to JJ that he'd like to try writing a song to his unborn son, though the task seemed daunting. JJ and Meven part ways for the evening. The idea weighs heavy on JJ's mind overnight, and the next day, JJ suddenly becomes inspired. JJ calls Meven. Meven is not home. JJ starts working on the song. By the time Meven returns JJ's call, the song is finished.
Meven comes over, hears song, says he doesn't want to change a single word. So there you have it. This is the song Meven wanted to write for his son Ethan, but JJ beat him to it. We've had many positive comments from friends and fans about the inspiration they've found in the lyrics to this song, and that makes ALL of this worthwhile for us. Everyone in the band brought their awesome energy to the studio and helped make this song a standout on the CD. |

| 7. | Lemon Pie Tangerine | Play | Lemon Pie Tangerine
Came home and sat at my piano - poured myself a glass of cabernet
Amarige still lingerin’ on my jacket - I had so much I wanted to say she may not see that we belong together or maybe it was just because she’s too afraid so I dimmed the lights and searched for inspiration & thought “when she hears this I’m gonna have it made” I tried to write some words to win her over looked deep inside myself to find that clever phrase blank paper speak to me – cause I’ve got nothing cool to say Lemon pie tangerine …tangerine… Countless nights I’ve sat at that piano pouring out my heart onto the page sculpting lines that conjure up emotion to make you feel my love or taste my rage It wasn’t this hard when I wrote that song about Leah or the ones about Rachel, Amy, Heather or Jane I knew I could feel something real and one good line woulda’ helped me find it and I’d reel her in with the big refrain… I tried to write some words to win her over looked deep inside myself to find that clever phrase blank paper speak to me – cause I’ve got nothing cool to say Lemon pie tangerine …tangerine… |

A song about writer's block (something all too familiar) and lack of inspiration about a female come together in a bluesy, doowop, gospel mix on this very unique track. We've been asked countless times what "Lemon Pie Tangerine" means. We don't know. But it's catchy. Read the rest of the lyrics and figure it out.

Our apologies. (Let's just say this first collaboration from Meven and JJ shows that some writing teams need to work out the kinks before they really find their stride.)

they oughta call you Mr. Hypocrit – prince of counterfeit
every word sticky-sweet with compassion, ‘cause that’s the latest fashion and so you cash in.. you had the chance then to rearrange now your time’s running out & ain’t a damn thing changed can you say it’s getting better when everyone’s a debtor? So much to do, so much to say, so many promises still left to break, but hey- it’s okay, they’ll look the other way and smile when they say you were king for a day are you still gonna feel our pain when there’s nothing left to gain? are you still gonna feel our pain when there’s nothing left to gain? This is the day of the tired cliché; it ain’t what you do, it’s what you say and everybody is a prostitute – it’s just how well you can sell it in a three-piece suit so much angst and yet we don’t know why too tired to fight, too dumb to try – I’ve heard your song one too many times, you’re just a game-show host spittin’ worn out lines Define the rules that don’t apply to you, and take a bow for what you didn’t do but hey, it’s okay – who needs the truth? we’ve no right to judge, despite the proof are you still gonna feel our pain when there’s nothing left to gain? are you still gonna feel our pain when there’s nothing left to gain? Oh, oh – Mr. I don’t know (Mr. I don’t know) Oh, oh – Mr. I don’t know (Mr. I don’t know) are you still gonna feel our pain, when there’s nothing left to gain? are you still gonna feel our pain, when there’s nothing left to gain? |

Who is this song about? Mister, if you ask, we'll say we don't know. (We know, but we're not telling.)
A throwaway album cut that exists mainly because of the coolest part of the song: the bridge. Listen for the "Fastball" guitar counter melody going on underneath the vocals during the bridge. Fun stuff. |

(meven):Just cause we share the same color skin
don’t assume that I won’t take offense to racist comments whispered under your breath I won’t contribute to your ignorance until you choose to give love a chance you won’t get past the hate with an open heart and an open mind let down your guard – you’ll be sure to find… There’s only one real remedy to heal the wounds that divide us Love and only love will set us free there’s more to me than what you see (Keith): If you see me - out in public with a brother of a different color than me don’t tell your friends that I’m a sellout you don’t know me or what I’m all about until you choose to give love a chance you won’t get past the hate with an open heart and an open mind let down your guard – you’ll be sure to find… There’s only one real remedy to heal the wounds that divide us Love and only love will set us free there’s more to me than what you see love and only love will be there love and only love will be there only love will be there in the end |

A song Brian and JJ wrote after discussing the frustrations of race relations in society today. Roommates and longtime close friends, JJ and Brian had an intimate conversation one night about what frustrates them about their own races when it comes to racism. This concept became the foundation for this song from a lyrical standpoint, and a strong statement the band hopes to advance to a larger audience as we continue on this journey...
Our best gigs have been gigs where there is a mix of black and white in the audience, and the music brings everyone together. No animosity, no hatred, no ignorance, no judgement. The civil rights movement ended formal segregation years ago, but too often today we voluntarily segregate ourselves along racial lines and our judgment is too often born of fear and ignorance. The only way to bridge that distance is by each of us reaching out individually, one person at a time. Until you choose to give love a chance, you won't get past the hate. With an open heart and an open mind, let down your guard. You'll be sure to find - there's only one real remedy to heal the wounds that divide us. Love and only love will set us free. Thanks to Keith Floyd for bringing his A-game to the studio for this guest vocal spot. |

I may not be exactly what you had in mind – it’s true
I may not have a lot of worldly things to offer you still trying to find my way – I don’t have the answers yet It’s harder every day – I suppose I’m not your safest bet… I may not have the type of looks that take your breath away I’m clumsy with words – I don’t always know the right thing to say but all that you deserve, I hope that I can be ‘cause you make me wanna try to become a better man – a better man than I am to be worthy of a girl like you I’ll love you as long as I live… and although it may not seem like much, it’s all that I have to give all that you deserve, I hope that I can be ‘cause you make me wanna try to become a better man – a better man than I am to be worthy of a girl like you I’ll love you as long as I live… and although it may not seem like much - and I know it may not seem like much and although it may not be that much, it’s all that I have to give |

A heartfelt piano ballad that (sniff sniff) didn't win over the girl it was written for. She cried when she heard it, but she never did date the composer. C'est La Vie.
This was recorded as an afterthought back in '99; Groove Addiction did a recording session at MTSU and after the sessions, there was a few extra minutes left before the next session was to begin, so JJ and Meven seized the moment. In one take, they laid down this song and headed out of the session thinking they'd screwed it up and it wouldn't be worth saving. Months later, they heard it again for the first time and were pleasantly surprised at the honest, sincere delivery. Meven missed a note or two, but something about the rawness of it really spoke to us. After eliciting tears from the first few females to hear it, we realized we were onto something with this one. This same recording was added as an afterthought "bonus track" to our first CD, and it still gets a strong reaction from many who hear it. Brian still insists that this song is an enormous hit song that the world just hasn't heard yet. I guess time will tell if they get to or not. Until then, it's between y'all and us. |
2002 debut CD of original music from the Southeast's premiere party band. Critically-acclaimed 11-song set is a tight mix of funk, pop & rock that's sure to please even those with the most discriminating tastes. "This multifacted local band have prepared an LP of original material that sounds as thought it were derived from Prince, Steely Dan, and the New Radicals. Their songs are slick, smooth and danceable, with biting socially aware lyrics and an appealingly jazzy guitar sound." - The Nashville Scene
